Lloyd Kaufman

I’ve been a fan of Fumita Yanagida’s hilarious manga series, Tomo-chan Can’t Be a Girl for some time now. It follows the misadventures of Tomo Aizawa, a boy who desperately wants to be a girl. Vol. 1 is full of laugh-out-loud gags and heartwarming scenes that will make you fall in love with this endearing character!

One of my favorite moments in Volume 1 was when Tomo accidentally got trapped in the girls’ bathroom while trying to hide from his classmates. As he tried to sneak out, Tomo was confronted by a group of fierce-looking girls who were convinced he was an intruder! Fortunately, Tomo had brought along some candy and managed to bribe his way out of trouble. I’m sure many readers can relate to being in awkward situations like this!

Another thing I loved about Tomo-chan Can’t Be a Girl is how it doesn’t shy away from tackling serious topics like gender identity and bullying. In one scene, Tomo opens up about his struggle to accept himself as he is, and the story shows us how people around him rally together to support him. This kind of touching moment reminds us that we all have our own unique battles to fight and that we’re never alone.

If you’re looking for a lighthearted comedy with plenty of heartfelt moments, then look no further than Tomo-chan Can’t Be a Girl! Volume 1 is sure to leave you with a smile on your face and warmth in your heart.

What I don’t Like

2. Pacing issues – The pacing of this manga can be too slow for some readers and may feel like it drags in certain places.
3. Unusual art style – The art style of Tomo-chan Can’t Be a Girl may not appeal to everyone as it has an unusual, sketchy, and somewhat minimalist look.
4. Not suitable for younger audiences – This manga contains a lot of suggestive themes, which may make it unsuitable for younger audiences.
