My Experience for Coolidge: An American Enigma
I’m sure you’ve heard of Calvin Coolidge, the 30th President of the United States. I recently picked up a copy of Coolidge: An American Enigma, written by Robert Sobel. It was an amazing read and I’m so glad I decided to give it a try.
The book tells the story of Coolidge’s life and his rise to power, from the small towns of Vermont to Washington D.C. The author does an incredible job of bringing Coolidge to life, showing his intelligence, practicality, and wit.
At one point in the book, Sobel recounts how Coolidge made a speech at a college in 1924 that lasted only five minutes—but left an impression on everyone in attendance for years to come. Another highlight is when Coolidge makes a joke about running for re-election during a dinner with Republican party leaders—to their surprise, he goes ahead and does just that!
But my favorite part comes near the end of the book, when Sobel talks about Coolidge’s legacy and what he accomplished as president. He points out that while many presidents have been forgotten over time, Coolidge’s legacy still stands strong today—and it’s all thanks to the amazing work he did while in office.
