Barnum’s circus to Scientology; from mad science fiction to Silicon Valley startups; from religious revivals to New Age mystics; Fantasyland shows how all these seemingly unrelated phenomena are connected. Along the way, it paints a vivid portrait of our society’s eternal struggle between faith and reason. With wit and insight, Andersen offers us a fascinating look at just how far we have strayed from reality—and where we might be headed next.

My Experience for Fantasyland: How America Went Haywire: A 500-Year History

Lloyd Kaufman

My journey to Fantasyland started in the 16th century. I was on a quest to uncover how America had gone haywire.

My first stop was Jamestown, Virginia, where I discovered that the Virginia Company of London had promised settlers riches and freedom in exchange for taking on a dangerous voyage across the Atlantic. I couldn’t believe it – people were actually willing to risk their lives for the possibility of a better life!

From there, my travels took me to Salem, Massachusetts, where I learned about the witch trials and how superstitious beliefs led to the persecution of innocent people. It was shocking to read about all of the false claims that people believed as truth.

Next, I made my way to Philadelphia in 1776, where I uncovered how one man’s grand vision of freedom was able to bring together 13 disparate colonies into a united nation. This newfound freedom would later become known as The American Dream.

Finally, my journey ended in Silicon Valley, California, where I watched firsthand as technology companies created virtual worlds that blurred the lines between reality and fantasy. It seemed like anything was possible in this new world!

Through my travels, I discovered that America had been on a long journey from reality to fantasy – and this book gave me an eye-opening look at just how far we have come. From Jamestown to Silicon Valley, from false claims to grand visions – Fantasyland: How America Went Haywire is an incredible exploration of our 500 year history.
