My Experience for Everything Is Illuminated

Lloyd Kaufman

I recently picked up a copy of Everything Is Illuminated by Jonathan Safran Foer. I was immediately hooked when I opened the book to its first page. What an amazing story!

The premise is simple: a young American, Jonathan, travels to Ukraine in search of the woman who saved his Jewish grandfather during World War II. To help him on his journey, he hires a Ukrainian tour guide and translator, Alex. But what follows is anything but simple.

As the two travel further and further into Ukraine’s unknown villages and countryside, we get glimpses of the history and culture that shaped the region for so long — as well as some of the more absurd elements of life there. We see how language can both bring people together and highlight their differences. And we get to know Alex, a complex character who’s trying to find a place for himself in a rapidly changing world.

With each turn of the page, I found myself caught up in this incredible story. The writing is vivid and often humorous — it makes you feel like you’re right there with Jonathan and Alex on their journey. I laughed out loud at times and teared up at others — all while delving deeper into a world full of mystery and beauty beyond compare.

If you’re looking for an unforgettable read, pick up Everything Is Illuminated. You won’t be disappointed!
