My Experience for Amelia Bedelia
When I was a kid, I loved Amelia Bedelia! She always seemed to get into the craziest situations—and she was always so funny! From the moment I opened Amelia Bedelia by Peggy Parish, I knew I was in for a wild ride.
The book starts off with Amelia being hired as a maid for Mr. and Mrs. Rogers. She takes every instruction literally, so when Mrs. Rogers tells her to “draw the drapes”, she proceeds to draw a picture of the drapes on paper! This sets up a hilarious chain of events that had me laughing out loud throughout the entire book.
Another memorable scene is when Mr. Rogers tells Amelia to “mix up some martinis” and she proceeds to mix up all sorts of ingredients, including olives and onions! Trust me; you have to read this book to find out what happens next!
Amelia Bedelia is full of silly misunderstandings that are sure to make any reader chuckle. It’s the perfect story for kids who love humor, adventure and absurdity!
What I don’t Like
1. The illustrations are outdated – the book was first published in 1963, and though the story is timeless, some of the cultural references may be lost on modern readers.
2. Some of the humor may be too subtle for younger readers – Amelia’s misunderstandings of instructions can often be quite subtle, which might go unnoticed by children who haven’t yet developed their understanding of idioms and expressions.
3. The language can be difficult for young learners – some of the vocabulary used in Amelia Bedelia books can be challenging for new readers, and might require parental guidance to understand what is going on.
