My Experience for Angela’s Ashes: A Memoir

Lloyd Kaufman

My name is Frank McCourt and I am the author of Angela’s Ashes: A Memoir. This book is my story, a tale of poverty, hardship and ultimately redemption.

Growing up in Limerick, Ireland during the 1930s and 40s was hard. We were dirt poor, living in cramped conditions with little money for food or clothes. My father drank away what little we had, leaving my mother to fend for herself, and four young children.

But despite our dire circumstances, I managed to find beauty in my life – a kind teacher at school who recognized my talent for writing; a librarian who introduced me to books that opened up a whole new world; my mother’s unwavering love and devotion; and ultimately, the courage to leave Ireland behind and take a chance on America.

Angela’s Ashes is my tribute to those who supported me during those dark days, as well as an inspirational message of hope to those still struggling against poverty and adversity today. Angelas Ashes, published by Scribner, is a powerful memoir that will stay with you long after you turn the final page.
