My Experience for The Diary of a Young Girl

Lloyd Kaufman

As a young Jewish girl living in Nazi-occupied Amsterdam during World War II, I made the best out of my situation and kept a diary. The Diary of a Young Girl is my story.

I was born on June 12th, 1929 to Otto and Edith Frank. My family moved to Amsterdam when I was four years old, and it became our home. Although we were living under oppressive circumstances, I still had some joyous moments like attending school dances, seeing movies with friends and taking trips to the beach.

I wrote about everyday life in my diary; from school, to my friends, to my family. I wanted to capture all the events so that no matter what happened in the future, I would be able to look back on them.

My family went into hiding on July 6th, 1942 and lived in secret annex for two years. During this time, I wrote about my thoughts and feelings while in hiding as well as how we were managing day-to-day life with limited resources.

On August 4th, 1944, the Gestapo arrested us and took us away from our home. We were sent to various concentration camps until May 1945 when we were liberated by the Allied Forces. Sadly, my father passed away due to illness during his imprisonment but my mother survived and returned to Amsterdam after the war ended.

Although I did not survive to see my diary published posthumously, it has since become an important historical document for all those who are interested in understanding the struggles of Jews during World War II. The Diary of a Young Girl is a powerful testament of courage and resilience that will live on for years to come.
