My Experience for Awkward (Berrybrook Middle School)

Lloyd Kaufman

I’m not sure when it all started becoming a little “Awkward” in Berrybrook Middle School.
Maybe it was when I saw the new girl, Peppi Torres, with her bright green hair and cool style. Or maybe it was when my best friend Jax moved away. Whatever it was, I knew things were never going to be the same again.

But that’s just how life is sometimes. And I had to figure out a way to cope with all the changes. That’s when I found Svetlana Chmakova’s Awkward, an amazing graphic novel about friendship, fitting in and standing out—all set in Berrybrook Middle School.

The story follows six friends as they navigate the ups and downs of middle school life: from bullies, crushes and cliques to art clubs, science fairs and global friendships. It’s a hilarious and heartfelt look at what it takes to find your place in a world that doesn’t always make sense.

Reading Awkward felt like looking into a mirror—it was so relatable! The illustrations are beautiful too; they give you an inside look at what it’s like to be a kid navigating the awkwardness of middle school life.

If you’re looking for something that will make you laugh, cry and feel understood, then Awkward by Svetlana Chmakova is definitely the book for you!

What I don’t Like

1. Characters lack depth: The characters in the book are not very well-developed and some of them come across as stereotypes.
2. Dialogue can be stilted: Some of the dialogue between the characters feels unnatural and forced.
3. Plot is predictable: The plot follows a rather generic template and there are few surprises along the way.
4. Setting could be more vivid: The setting is described only briefly, so it’s hard to get a real sense of the world in which the characters inhabit.
5. Artwork is inconsistent: The artwork has an uneven quality with some panels looking great while others feel rushed or uninspired.

Find an activity or hobby that allows you to express yourself in a healthy way; whether it’s music, writing, sports, or any other kind of creative outlet.
