Lloyd Kaufman

I was so excited when I heard about Borderlands/La Frontera: The New Mestiza by Gloria Anzald–a. As soon as I got my hands on it, I couldn’t put it down! I found myself getting lost in the pages and forgetting about everything else around me.

It’s a fascinating exploration of identity and culture across the U.S.-Mexico border. The book follows Anzald–a’s journey to understand her own identity as she discovers and embraces her Mestiza heritage. She shares her experiences traveling between both countries, attempting to reconcile her two sides- Mexican and American identities- and how they interact with each other.

I loved that this book wasn’t just a dry exploration of identity politics; Anzald–a also weaves in colorful stories of her life, family, and travels in both Mexico and America. It was like being immersed in a vivid dream, one full of myths, history, and personal reflections.

One of my favorite parts was when she explored the concept of “border thinking”, or the idea that you can see the world from different perspectives depending on which side of the U.S.-Mexico border you’re standing on. This concept is so powerful and resonated deeply with me.

Overall, Borderlands/La Frontera: The New Mestiza was an incredibly eye-opening experience for me.
