My Experience for Cannery Row by John Steinbeck

Lloyd Kaufman

I never expected to find one of the most delightful stories I’ve ever read in Cannery Row by John Steinbeck. It’s a heartwarming and humorous tale that follows a group of friends living on the edge of Monterey Bay, California.

Every character has their own unique story and personality that slowly reveals itself as you read through the book. For example, Doc is an eccentric marine biologist who runs his laboratory out of a former bathhouse and spends his days observing the sea life outside his window. Then there’s Mack, the leader of a band of vagabonds known as The Palace Flophouse and Grill, who spends his days drinking, fishing and causing trouble around town.

The characters are vividly portrayed and their interactions with each other make for some hilarious dialogue. Additionally, Steinbeck’s vivid descriptions of the setting create a beautiful atmosphere that draws you into this world.

Cannery Row is filled with stories of friendship and love, as well as tragedy and despair. It’s an unforgettable journey that will leave you laughing, crying and appreciating life more than ever before. A must-read for any fan of classic literature!

What I don’t Like

1. Lack of Character Development: Despite the vivid characters, Cannery Row does not focus much on individual character development.
2. Limited Plotline: The novel has a limited plot that follows a predictable trajectory and is mostly focused on dialogue and description rather than action.
3. Slow Pace: The story unfolds at a slow pace and there are few exciting moments or unexpected twists.
4. Difficult to Follow: Steinbeck’s writing style can be difficult to follow for some readers, as his prose is often dense and poetic.
5. Lack of Focus: The novel jumps from topic to topic, touching on philosophical issues, social commentary, and other musings without much structure or cohesion between them.
