My Experience for Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus

Lloyd Kaufman

I recently had the pleasure of reading Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus, a hilarious children’s book by Mo Willems. The book follows the mischievous Pigeon as he attempts to convince readers that he should be allowed to drive a bus.

The book is full of entertaining illustrations and a fun story. I especially enjoyed when the Pigeon argued with a reader over why he should be able to drive the bus. The way he cleverly retorts against all the reasons why it’s not safe for him to drive was so funny.

My kids had a great time joining in on the conversation, and were even more excited when they got to help decide whether or not the Pigeon should get behind the wheel. Needless to say, they were very disappointed when they found out that driving a bus isn’t something pigeons do!

As an adult, I love how this book encourages kids to think critically and use their imagination. It’s also great for teaching them about safety rules and how to make responsible decisions. Overall, I highly recommend Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus as a must-have for any family library!

What I don’t Like

Product Disadvantages:
1. Illustrations are not as detailed as other books in the series.
2. The text is simplistic, which may be too simple for some children.
3. The ending is somewhat predictable.
4. Some of the humor and puns may go over younger readers’ heads.
5. The book relies heavily on repetition, which can get boring after a while.

How to Teach Kids Empathy with Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus

Parents looking for a fun way to teach their kids empathy can use Mo Willems’s beloved classic Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus. This story follows a very persistent pigeon trying to get his way. As humorous as it is, this book also has an important message about standing up for yourself and understanding others’ perspectives.

The first way this story can help teach empathy is by talking about how it feels when someone doesn’t listen to you or understand your point of view. You can ask your child if they have ever felt like the pigeon in the story, and try to put yourselves in his shoes. This will help your child understand that even if they don’t always get what they want, it’s important to try and see things from other people’s perspective.

Another great way to use this book is role-playing. Have your child pretend to be the pigeon and you be “the bus driver”. Ask them what they would do if they were in the pigeon’s shoes, then discuss different ways that both parties could have come away with a good outcome. Talk about how important it is for everyone involved to be heard and respected.

Finally, reading stories like Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus is a great way to encourage children to express their emotions in a healthy manner. The pigeon does get frustrated but he never resorts to violence or hurting anyone else. Discussing these topics after reading will help your child learn how to handle their own emotions better and build stronger relationships with those around them.

Using books like Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus can be an enjoyable way for parents to help their children develop empathy. It’s important that we teach our kids how to understand and respect others’ feelings so that they can grow into compassionate adults!
