Who are They for

Katherine Dunn’s Geek Love is an unforgettable novel, a powerful and darkly humorous epic of a carnival family’s fierce struggle to survive, told in the voice of its own indomitable matriarch. Alobar and Lilo breed their own sideshow, based on the principle that “Life is not only stranger than we imagine, it is stranger than we can imagine.” They have created a family of freaks — including Arturo the Aquaboy, Chick the Siamese twin, and Iphy, the lovable two-headed dwarf — who are bound together by love.

This modern classic is a searing exploration of human deformity and devotion, of power and exploitation. It is also a profoundly moving story about life in all its forms; about loyalty, courage and determination; about freedom in all its guises; and about the bonds of family. With her unique blend of vivid prose, humor and heartbreak, Katherine Dunn gives us a powerful portrait of what it means to be alive.

My Experience for Geek Love: A Novel by Katherine Dunn

Lloyd Kaufman

Geek Love, by Katherine Dunn, is the story of a family unlike any other. The Binewskis are a traveling carnival show family that has bred their own sideshow attractions – like Arty, a boy born with flippers for hands; Iphy and Elly, conjoined twins; and Chick, a hunchback dwarf.

I was fascinated by this family of oddities from the moment I picked up Geek Love. From the very first page, I felt like I had been transported to another world – one where all kinds of freakishness is celebrated. I was captivated by each unique character’s stories of love, loss, joy, pain, and acceptance.

The writing in Geek Love is beautiful and raw. Katherine Dunn writes with so much emotion that it feels like you are right there with the characters as they experience life’s highs and lows. She captures a wide range of human emotions in such an honest and powerful way that it’s impossible not to be moved by her words.

One of my favorite things about Geek Love is how it challenges society’s ideas of “normalcy”. It shows us that beauty comes in all shapes and sizes – even when those shapes and sizes don’t fit into what’s considered “conventional”. It teaches us to embrace our differences and be proud of who we are – no matter how weird or out-of-the-ordinary we may be.

Katherine Dunn’s Geek Love is an unforgettable novel that will stay with you long after you finish reading it. Whether you’re looking for an engrossing story or an inspiring reminder to love yourself for who you are, this book is sure to deliver!

What I don’t Like

1. Disturbing subject matter: Geek Love is a dark and surreal novel that grapples with topics such as genetic manipulation, deformity, incest, and murder.
2. Graphic descriptions: The novel contains vivid and explicit descriptions of physical deformities and presents an unflinching look at the cruel realities of life in a circus freak show.
3. Challenging narrative structure: The story is told from multiple perspectives, jumping back and forth in time and space, which can be hard to follow at times.
4. Unreliable narrators: Several of the narrators are unreliable, presenting distorted views of events that have taken place or will take place in the future.
5. Complex characters: The characters are complex and often morally ambiguous, making it difficult to connect emotionally with them.
