My Experience for Interpreter of Maladies by Jhumpa Lahiri

Lloyd Kaufman

I had been looking for a book to get lost in, and I found Interpreter of Maladies by Jhumpa Lahiri. It was exactly what I was looking for!

The stories were fascinating and kept me hooked until the very last page. I felt like I was a part of each story, like the characters were my friends.

One of my favorite stories is about a couple who visit India and meet an elderly couple living in poverty. They offer to help them but the elderly couple refuses. The story was so poignant, it made me think about how sometimes we can’t help even if we want to.

Another story that made me laugh out loud was about a young girl who visits her grandmother’s house in India and discovers an old photograph of her father when he was a young man. She imagines wild adventures he must have gone on during his youth – it was really funny!

Interpreter of Maladies by Jhumpa Lahiri is filled with funny, heartbreaking, exciting stories full of insight into human nature. If you’re looking for a great read, then this one’s for you!

What I don’t Like

1. Limited in its scope of stories, with only nine short stories
2. Little character development throughout
3. Themes of love and family explored in a limited capacity
4. Does not have an overarching plot structure
5. Has been criticized for focusing too heavily on Indian-American characters
