The story follows Chiyo, a young girl from a poor fishing village in Japan who is sold into a geisha house. As she grows up, she learns the skills and secrets of the geisha trade and embarks on a journey to become the top geisha in all of Japan.
What I love most about this book is how authentic it feels. Arthur Golden has done an excellent job at recreating the atmosphere of 1930’s Japan. The details he provides about geishas and their culture are fascinating. I also appreciate how he manages to capture the beauty, tragedy and romance of the geisha lifestyle without glamorizing it or glossing over its darker elements.
One of my favorite parts of Memoirs of a Geisha was getting to experience Chiyo’s transformation from an innocent village girl into a sophisticated woman of Gion. Her struggles and successes were inspiring to follow, as were her relationships with other characters such as Mameha, Pumpkin, and Chairman Katagiri.
