My Experience for Milkman: A Novel

Lloyd Kaufman

I’ve always been a fan of Anna Burns’s Milkman. I was drawn to the novel's unique style and its exploration of complicated themes. But what really made me fall in love with this book was its humor!

I laughed out loud more than once reading about the protagonist's awkward encounters in her small Northern Irish town. For example, when she gets caught up in a conversation with an old man who wants her to take part in a strange game involving milk bottles and potatoes! It was just so absurdly funny.

One of my favorite moments from the book is when she visits her family doctor. He takes her temperature by holding his hand against her forehead, then proceeds to diagnose her with being too fond of books. She quickly retorts that he should be able to tell that she’s not sick — just highly literate!

But at the same time, Milkman isn’t just a lighthearted romp. The story also delves into some deep topics, like gender roles and violence. And it does so without ever being preachy or heavy-handed.

All in all, Milkman is a powerful and thought-provoking read that I would recommend to anyone looking for an engaging, humorous, and ultimately uplifting novel.

What I don’t Like

1. Unconventional story structure: Milkman has an unconventional story structure, with no clear protagonist or antagonist, and a lack of linear narrative.
2. Difficult to follow plot: The non-linear story can be difficult to follow and the narrative often jumps back and forth in time without warning.
3. Complex characters: The characters in Milkman are complex and multi-layered, making it hard to sympathize with any of them.
4. Unreliable narrator: The narrator is unreliable, which makes it difficult to trust their interpretations of events.
5. Lack of resolution: There is no clear resolution to the story, leaving the reader feeling confused and unsatisfied.
