How to Teach Your Kids About Responsibility With Mr. Popper’s Penguins
In Richard Atwater’s story, Mr. Popper’s Penguins, children learn valuable lessons about responsibility. Mr. Popper learns that having a pet comes with great responsibilities and he must take care of them properly. As parents, we can use this book to teach our kids how to be responsible for their own actions and decisions.
The main character, Mr. Popper, gets the unexpected surprise of being sent a real live penguin by an Antarctic explorer. At first, he is excited but soon realizes that having a pet requires a lot of work and responsibility from him. The story follows how he learns to take care of the penguin, finds ways to make money so that he can provide food and shelter for his new friend and ultimately starts a business out of it.
One way parents can use this book as a teaching tool is through roleplaying. Ask your child to pretend they are in Mr. Popper’s shoes and think about what they would do if they were in the same situation. Talk about the importance of taking care of animals and how it requires hard work and dedication. Explain that regardless of how fun something might seem at first, taking on responsibility is never easy but it’s worth it in the end.
You can also explain how Mr. Popper had to think creatively in order to make enough money to take care of his pet penguins – from selling homemade ice cream at the local theater to starting an attraction called “Popper’s Performing Penguins” for people all over town. This will help kids understand that having responsibility requires not only hard work but also using your imagination.
At the end of the day, Mr. Popper’s Penguins is a great book for teaching kids about responsibility in a fun and creative way!
