In this blog post, we’ll discuss how to create a captivating storyline with The Night Watchman.

First, it’s important to understand the main themes and characters in Erdrich’s novel. Thomas Wazhashk is a World War II veteran who takes on a job as a night watchman at an Ojibwe Reservation in North Dakota. Other characters in the novel include Sister Leopolda, Patrice’s aunt; Moses Pillager, Patrice’s great-uncle; and Nanapush, an elder member of the reservation.

Second, make sure that your story has plenty of conflict. Conflict is essential for creating suspense and keeping readers engaged throughout the story. In The Night Watchman, tension arises from three main sources: government officials’ attempts to remove Native Americans from their land; conflicts between members of different tribes; and tensions between characters within tribes.

Third, focus on character development. In The Night Watchman, Erdrich uses vivid descriptions of her characters’ physical features, personalities, motivations, and desires to make them come alive on the page. She also creates tangible connections between characters that reveal their inner worlds and give insight into their relationships with one another.

Finally, use symbolism to convey deeper meaning to your readers. Symbols can add depth to your story while also helping your readers connect emotionally with your characters’ experiences. In The Night Watchman, symbols such as birds, fireflies, stars, and other natural elements are used to represent hope, freedom, healing, and connection — all of which are integral parts of Thomas Wazhashk’s journey toward self-discovery.
