My Experience for The Phantom of the Opera (Original Novel)

Lloyd Kaufman

My friends and I were walking through the dark and dusty streets of Paris one night when we stumbled upon a bookshop. The odd thing was that there were no windows, only a door. We decided to take a chance and stepped inside.

What we found amazed us! The Phantom of the Opera, by Gaston Leroux, lay on a table in the corner of the shop. I picked it up and started to read it out loud to my friends. As I read, I felt as if I was being transported into another world – one of mystery and intrigue.

The Phantom of the Opera follows the story of Christine Daaé, an aspiring opera singer who is tutored by a mysterious figure known only as ‘The Angel of Music’. In time she discovers that her teacher is in fact The Phantom of the Opera, a disfigured genius living underneath the Paris Opera House.

As we read further into the book, we were drawn deeper into its world – so much so that we almost forgot about our surroundings! We were enthralled by The Phantom of the Opera, discovering more about his backstory and motivations for his actions throughout the novel.

We eventually made our way back home but The Phantom of the Opera stayed with me for a long time afterwards. It had taken me on a journey like no other and left me wanting more – it truly is an unforgettable classic!

What I don’t Like

1. Storyline is complex.
2. Characters lack development.
3. Lengthy novel.
4. Slow-paced narrative.
5. Language is overly descriptive and flowery.
6. Unfamiliar 19th century French culture and customs may be difficult to understand for some readers.
7. Difficult to relate to the characters’ moral codes and values of the time period.
