My Experience for The Sneetches and Other Stories

Lloyd Kaufman

Once upon a time, there were two groups of Sneetches. The ones with stars on their bellies and the ones without. One day, a sly old Sylvester McMonkey McBean came to town with his star-on machine. He had an idea and he was sure it was grand: soon all the Sneetches would have stars on their hands!

The Sneetches without stars looked at the ones with stars in envy, wishing they could have them too. But little did they know that McMonkey McBean had plans for them too. He offered to put stars on their bellies for only three dollars each. So many of them paid up, eager to finally join the crowd.

But soon after, the Sneetches with stars began to look down on those without. They were so proud of their new shiny addition that they felt superior in every way. It wasn’t long before some Sneetches began to feel like second-class citizens because they didn’t have stars on their bellies.

That’s when the wise old Ted made his entrance. He had heard about what happened and wanted to help put things right again. He offered to put a star on any Sneetch who wanted one – free of charge! Soon enough, all the Sneetches had stars on their bellies – no matter which group they belonged to.

And that’s how everyone learned that it doesn’t matter what you have or don’t have; it’s what’s inside that counts in life. With The Sneetches and Other Stories, you can learn this meaningful lesson along with many others from Dr Seuss himself!
