Review: Tolkien – An Epic Tale of Adventure and Love by Director Dome Karukoski
Tolkien, directed by Dome Karukoski, is a must-see for any fan of fantasy literature. This biographical drama tells the story of J.R.R. Tolkien’s early life and gives a glimpse into his experiences that would later inspire him to create Middle-earth and its inhabitants in The Lord of the Rings. The movie does an excellent job of balancing the personal journey of the author with his professional success, giving us a deep understanding of who he was as a person. The acting is superb, with Nicholas Hoult and Lily Collins both turning in strong performances. The visuals are stunning, and the score is hauntingly beautiful. In short, this film is an incredible tribute to one of the greatest authors in history.
While there are some moments where it feels like it could be more focused or even more ambitious, overall Tolkien succeeds at being both entertaining and thought-provoking. Fans of The Lord of the Rings will love seeing how his life experiences shaped the world they know and love, while those unfamiliar with Tolkien’s work will still be able to appreciate this biopic for its touching story and great production values. All in all, Tolkien is an excellent example of how powerful storytelling can be when done right.
