My Experience for We Are Market Basket: The Story of the Unlikely Grassroots Movement That Saved a Beloved Business

Lloyd Kaufman

My life changed when I read We Are Market Basket: The Story of the Unlikely Grassroots Movement That Saved a Beloved Business. Before reading this book, I had no idea how a grassroots movement could save a beloved business. But after reading it, I was amazed by the incredible story of the Market Basket workers and customers.

The story starts in 2014 with Arthur T. Demoulas, the CEO of Market Basket, being ousted from his position by his rival cousin. This caused an uproar among the employees who felt that their beloved leader was being unjustly removed from his post. Led by two brave leaders, employees and customers alike banded together to form an unlikely grassroots movement. Through protests and boycotts they successfully forced their rival cousin to reinstate Arthur T. Demoulas as CEO.

I was inspired by how dedicated and determined the Market Basket workers were in standing up for what they believed in. It is an amazing testament to the power of ordinary people coming together to make a difference. As I read this book, I felt so proud of everyone involved in this incredible story!

What I don’t Like

1. The book is heavily focused on the Market Basket story and does not provide a lot of detail about how a similar grassroots movement could be developed for other businesses.
2. It does not discuss the legal aspects of starting or managing a grassroots movement, nor does it address the potential risks involved in getting involved with one.
3. There is no discussion of how to create an effective online presence for a grassroots movement, or any tips on how to manage one.
4. The book does not provide advice on how to measure success or failure when engaging in a grassroots campaign.
5. Many readers may find the chapters that are dedicated to recounting the details of the Market Basket story too long and tedious.
6. Some readers may find the language used throughout the book overly flowery and unnecessarily detailed at times.
7. There is no discussion about how to use social media effectively in order to promote a grassroots movement.
8. The book does not provide any examples of successful grassroots movements other than Market Basket.
